- Hello everybody and welcome!
What if we put an external instrument into a feedback chain? How does it interact with a feedback and viceversa?
In the third video of my series dedicated to no input techniques I show you how to put some external instruments into a feedback chain and the consequences on sound and timbre.
Can no input techniques be useful as sound processing tools?
I make a couple of practical examples using different sound sources (acoustic and electronic ones) and share with you an improvised session with a setup based on feedbacks, acoustic and electronic instruments all togheter.
If you have any question feel free to ask in the comments, I'm more than happy to help you in your journey into this fascinating world!
All of the sounds recorded in this video are also available as a sample pack on my Patreon. Hey man, I just wanted to say: I respect the hell out of you for making these tutorials and it breaks my heart to see all these huge RUclipsrs knocking off your techniques without giving you any credit.
For what it’s worth: I see you and I’ll make sure all of my students know who the real OG is.
I really appreciate that! My goal is to create informative videos so it would be great if they reach also your students! But to be clear: I didn't invented anything, this technique has been around for a long time, probably I just started a little niche trend that will last a couple of weeks cause of the algorythm hahaha. Anyway it's fine too, I hope the use of feedbacks and no input techniques will be useful and inspirational for people who don't know them (even through the work of other youtubers). It is such a vast field and can be applied from experimental music to sound design, to whatever so more people knows it, more creativity is sparkled, the more I'm happy! Thanks again for your nice words! They mean a lot!
The vocals are like a swarm of sentient bees, i love it
I love the fact that there is a sort of filtering but also the harmonic content of the voice interacts so well with the feedback, changing its harmonic content as well. Lot of possible explorations there, for sure.
The opposite of popular music that’s why it’s so good.If you get it your already got,if you don’t get it you never will, brilliant work
Thanks! Glad you appreciate it!
Damnd those vocals sounds great. Got me to wanna try to combining making rap music with these techniques
Oh that would be super nice to try! And thanks!
That singing was like heavy metal Gregorian chanting, very cool. So much more satisfying than just adding distortion.
Thanks!
The Bouzuki part came as a very pleasant surprise, sounded very proggy.
Thank you!
Summer is time for fuzzed out psychedelic bouzouki. Also, winter. And fall and spring too.
hypersaturated psych bouzouki for life
11:31 ! yessss!
The Gregorian Chant vibe! Andreij my man, somewhere Jimi Hendrix is smiling! As always a mind expanding video! Thanks and Greetings from New Mexico!
Thank you so much
Excellent! This is the part I was the most excited for. Just assumed it was in the works. 👍
Hope you'll like it!
7:30, doom 2016 vibes
AND I LOVE IT
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Im a big fan of running drums into the feedback loop, 808 patterns work really nice as the loop automatically sidechains itself to the drums (mainly the kick and snare)
Yeah, that's a super cool way of processing drums and make feedback interact with more structured sounds! I love it too!
Me too. These vids are great. Subbed and signed up to your patreon. Obsessed with subtle rhythms and ducking Ever since I heard Outpt by Autechre. I’m new to feedback mixing and struggling to patch a pulse into a drone on a mixer. Do you know a link to any photos of cables ins/outs or diagrams etc?? Thx. 😊
Thank you so much! Super appreciated!
not really but you can totally send me a message on Patreon, send some pics and show me your setup, so I can try to help you!
New vid, nice one. I often use a YIM (Yes Input Mixing) set up. Like you say, I'm not a purist, if I was I wouldn't be experimenting.
Exactly!
The magician noise returns!
Far too kind! Thank you!
bro, the jam of the end of the video, is AWESOME
Thanks! Happy you like it!
@@AndreijRublev if you end up publishing, or you have published, count that i will listen to it, regularly, and if i could purhcase it, i will do it no doubt

Yeah that Bouzouki jam gives off a Velvet Underground vibe its great! You're motivating people to experiment thanks.
Thanks for the nice words! that's my goal and I'm super happy it is working!
Phasers at full depth are my favorite way of getting some rhythm into no input.
(:
Great suggestion! Thanks!
Immediately does a middle eastern type of singing.
This is an amazing topic and with each video I think of more questions and experiments like:
What if the mixer has motorized faders and by switching between saved settings you basically will be able to automate a modulation?
What if you put a compressor with a side chain input to duck the feedback rhythmically?
Can you starve the mixer's power supply so you change its sound?
This video series is a lot of fun! :)
Super interesting questions. For me the "control" side of this technique is slightly less interesting in terms of composition/performance. I''m more into the improvisation, human/machine interplay. But making some tests starting from these questions can be very cool!
The side chaining is fascinating....what if you use a sequencer??
@@guerrillaradio9953 In one of the next videos I'm going to explore cv signals and sequencers with no input! Soon, promised ;)
motorized faders, as i understand them, just represent the value of a digital control signal with their position. they don't actually have a resistive element inside. so I don't think they can be used to automate a smooth modulation, because despite them moving at less-than-instantaneous speeds, the control values are switching nearly instantaneously when you, for instance, load a saved scene on a digital mixer.
I love this , how did I not know about you? I've got wiring to do!
Glad you like the video! Always happy to share wiring shenanigans ;)
Another realy great Part in your No Input Series. Awesome how well it works with vocals and the Instrument in the second experiment. Lov your videos. Them inspiring me time and time again.
Super happy to hear that! Thank you!
What Filter Unit is it, looks and sounds good? ...and what drum machine or groovebox is it in the 3rd experiment, looks old and rare? 😅
@Fr33 Franken The filter is a Waldorf 2 pole (unfortunately out of production). The drum machine is an Arturia Drumbrute impact (not rare at all and pretty cheap second hand)
@@AndreijRublev
Thanks for the Info. With my bad eyes (can see 20% and 30% with glasses on) it's hard to see what equip someone uses.
...pretty cheap second hand is exactly my Budget in the most times. What is a good/useful Filter of that type of Budget?
@@3-ZEE No worries! Happy to help!
Thanks a lot for sharing ! I like very much the way you use this, very expressive :)
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Merci !!!
You're welcome!
Hello Andreij, Tilo here. Can you please explain how you exactly to integrate an instrument into the feedback chain. The chanel input is already ocupied by the patch cable so do you use one of the free chanel inputs?
@@tilostrauss Hello Tilo! Exactly that. You use one of your mixer's input to plug an instrument.
Great sound, man!!
Thanks! Glad you like it!
i didn't know your channel, i just discover it and i just want to say that i live that sound, f€&@ hot 🔥
Thank you! Glad you like it!
My mans gonna open a wormhole
Probably a side effect! Nothing to worry about hahaha!
Oooooooh nice!! 😁
My first youtube thumbnail face hahaha
Hi, i just a beginner for this no input idea. And i have question, how about we play some sample from laptop/mobile phone, is that dangerous for the laptop/mobile phone?
I mean like channel 1 and 2 we use for playing sample from laptop/mobile phone, and another channel we use for feedback idea. Thank you 🙏🏻
No problem with that! The principle is the same as if you plug a guitar or a drum machine or whatever, like you can see in this video so there are no issues for your phone. The mixer becomes a sort of effect/sound generator.
Hello there and friendly greetings!
I know it might sounds trivial but every tutorial about the No Input Setup reveal something new and something to ponder about, for me at least!
For istance, I'm a big fan of dark ambient, electro industrial and ambient industrial soundscapes and I'm absolutely eager to experiment what would happen to plug the outpot of some of my drones to a NIS! Also, as a rock lover I am seriously thinking the same about my electric guitar+multieffect pedal coupled to a NIS!
Unfortunately at the present time got no bucks to invest into second or third hands mixer to torture and use as guinea pigs but soon as my wallet becomes plump again, I need to get a couple of trashy mixer to sacrifice and start my journey!
There is something inexplicable in this technique that attract me so much!
Too bad I won't be able to partecipate to the next event you mention... I trust that there will be more, maybe this summer!
Have a great week and again thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the super nice words! Yeah, it is totally a fascinating and super vast field to explore, nothing trivial about it! Keep us updated about your future experiments!
Thank you for these great tutorials, your videos are very informative and surprising. A quick question: I understand that you plug your drumbrute into the loop of your no input mixer and that you use the pedals to modulate all that.
However I was wondering how you connect your pedals.
Using the effect send -> pedal chain -> input channel?
Directly on the output channel of the microphone or the drummachine?
And what do you think about using another effect send to use these (and therefore return send) to measure the impact of the effects pedal chain?
Thanks for your kind words! In this video I used the effects pedal between the no input setup and the audio interface (the path is roughly: main out of the mixer > effect pedals > audio interface), so they don't interact with the feedback' signal chain. However you can totally put them in the signal chain of the feedback, as you wrote in your example (whatever mixer output > effects > channel input) or even between your instrument and the mixer (drumbrute > effects > channel input). The possibilities are a lot in terms of patching. Experimenting with different type of routing is always fun and can lead to unexpected and interesting results!
You can also consider that in a mixer there are a lot of inputs that you can use both to make external sound sources interact with the feedback chain or to patch the mixer signal back into itself, and outputs (in many units they are even more than the inputs) and every output can be used to send the signal back into the mixer to create more complex interactions. That's basically and endless playground and for me it is always a lot of fun exploring it.
@@AndreijRublev Thank you for your explanations, it’s perfectly clear! Indeed, there is a lot to experiment with, I already know that I will spend hours and hours there... Thanks to you ;)
This is really amazing! I do no-input myself but have never been able to acheive anything like this. Could you please please please do a video explaining how you set some of this up? Also, where did you learn how to do a lot of this? Do you have any tips for for resources that teach no input methods? Where can i find that info?
First of all thank you! All the things I know about no input come from my personal experience, so I don't have any resource unfortunately. If you have some specific questions I can totally try to answer here!
Great thank you! I tried to add a guitar to my mixer before but got no sound at all from either the mixer or guitar. From then I assumed it could not be done. It was a while ago so I don't recall how I setup the patch either. In regards to how to get an input working, do you need to use a specific channel? Do you need a specific no input patch to work with it? Sorry I don't really know the language to ask the right questions here
If you add an electric guitar to a mixer with a no input patch you can use whatever channel you want but it have to be one with a gain control, so you can amplify the signal of the electric guitar.
Hmm ok. I will definitely try again and see if I get better results. Thank you very much. I will definitely be asking more questions 😁
@@tavishbryan1317 You're welcome!
You make me love more and more this technique, how many inputs and outputs do you recommend to have on my mixer so I can get interesting results?
Thanks! 4 outputs and 4 inputs is a good starting point imo.
Yooo! Thanks for the video...and all your others!
I think someone asked below but just wanted to clarify, are the instruments run into an input on the no input mixer?? and can you control their levels on the mixer? Thanks again!
Thank you! Yes, the instruments are connected directly into one of the channels of the no input mixer. You can control the instrument's volume as in a normal mixer with the volume fader and the gain knob. Of course you have to crank it up a lot because the rest of the audio signal is pretty hot, but still you can control how much of the instrument you want to have in the mix.
Hello again mate, i am wondering what your drum machine is here please?
Hello! It is a drumbrute impact!
Great video! I have a question: How is the setup in this case? The instruments and the pedal are in the same mixer with the feedback loop?
Thanks! The setup here is: no input mixer with various instruments in the feedback chain > filter > reverb
I should have wrote it in the video, my bad. Thanks for asking!
@@AndreijRublev Thanks a lot!
Who got one, can also plug a Korg Miku Stomp in with a melody or beat signal in it instead of a singing voice over a mic.
